How I Know When My Wavy Hair Needs Protein

October 16, 2021 by Emily Evert 13 Comments

The moisture vs protein balance is the most confusing aspect of learning how to care for your naturally wavy hair, in my opinion. I felt really overwhelmed by it early on. I tried to just avoid it, at first, and that wasn’t a disaster.

If you just cannot seem to figure out if your hair needs protein or not, that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace or waves. It may just take time to learn your hair well enough to make sense of your moisture and protein needs. It may help to take my how to determine your wavy hair type test!

Once I started to grasp my moisture and protein balance, it did help me get results that I was happier with.

I’ve gotten many comments and emails from people asking about moisture vs protein. I’ve pushed off writing this blog post because most resources say that high porosity hair needs a lot of protein, and low porosity hair doesn’t need much protein. That isn’t the case for me.

I’m not an expert so I can’t say with 100% certainty why that is. I have found a single source that gave me a potential answer…but just one, which is odd.

I’ve wondered if I just shouldn’t speak to this topic due to my hair not following the basic expectations of how porosity and moisture/protein balance are said to impact each other. I decided to finally write this post, though…because I don’t imagine that I am the only one who has found that my low porosity hair likes protein….a LOT.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there isn’t a ton of research about different hair types and how they react to different ingredients.

While I can’t provide any science behind why my hair needs what it needs, I can share how I’ve learned what my hair needs…and that may be helpful to others who are struggling to figure out what their hair needs, too. With that “disclaimer” in mind…let’s jump in!

Why Your Hair Is Only Wavy Sometimes

October 10, 2021 by Emily Evert 9 Comments

“I think my hair is wavy…but only sometimes? Why is that?”

This is a common question I’ve seen on wavy and curly hair groups. I thought it was worthy of its own blog post!

It’s natural for hair curl pattern to change based on the environment and how it’s treated day to day. This is true for all different types of hair. People who have hair that have looser hair patterns find that their hair looks and acts straight sometimes, and wavy other times. This can be really confusing, and makes people question what their ‘true’ hair type is.

I have a blog post that shares how to test if your hair is wavy, which you may find helpful if your goal is to help your hair look wavy all the time. I also have a blog post sharing a wavy hair curl pattern chart, which is often of interest to newbies, too. Anyway, this post is about discussing why your hair is straight sometimes and wavy other times.

How To Make Natural Wavy Hair Looser | How To Get Beachy Waves

September 29, 2021 by Emily Evert 1 Comment

So often it feels like we want the opposite of what we get! Girls with looser waves often want tighter ones, and those with tighter waves often want loser ones.

If you’re someone who often gets tighter waves or spirals but prefers that looser, beachy waves look – this post is for you!

Can You Change Your Natural Curl Pattern?

I have a blog post on wavy hair curl patterns. In that post I talk about how my hair can have pieces that range from 1C-2C in different sections and/or on different days. It’s very common for people to have a range of curl patterns naturally.

It’s also common for hair to have a range of possibilities depending on how it’s styled. I have a blog post where I attempted to show proof of how wavy hair technique matters more than products.  Technique can make a big difference in outcome. That’s what much of this blog post is about, is sharing techniques that can give you results in the looser end of your curl pattern.

Can you truly change your natural curl pattern? No, not naturally, anyway. There are chemical relaxing treatments you can have done if that interests you. Or, it’s possible that as you age your body will make natural changes that will change your hair. Many people see their hair get curlier or straighter after hormone changes such as puberty, pregnancy, childbirth or menopause.

My hair without product, and brushed out. This isn’t a look that I like on myself. However, I don’t have much natural definition. Others with naturally wavy hair can get some really voluminous, soft waves if they brush their waves out.

How To Take Care Of Fine Wavy Hair

September 12, 2021 by Emily Evert 13 Comments

A couple months ago I got a devacut on my wavy hair. It didn’t turn out like I had hoped…but I still benefitted from the experience. One of the best parts of the experience was that my stylist told me that I have fine hair.

I didn’t know this! I had previously believed that I had normal to thick hair strands, as that’s what results I got from a microscopic hair analysis test I did a couple of years ago.

While I would typically be inclined to believe the microscopic analysis over the stylist, when I thought about it, it made SO MUCH sense that my hair is fine rather than normal to thick. I had always thought that my hair didn’t behave the way that my hair type ‘should’. It makes way more sense that I just had my hair type wrong.

I often see others in wavy/curly communities recommend to newbies that they determine their hair type before they try to determine a hair routine that will work for them. I understand the logic behind this, but I also have found that it can be tricky to determine your hair type, which is why I don’t often give that advice myself.

However, I have now come up with a set of tests that I find to give the most accurate hair type results. So check out my post how to test your wavy hair type if you want to use my method for determining your hair type including porosity, density and thickness.

So first, I’ll share how to tell if you have fine hair and then I’ll go into what techniques or practices may work best for you if you have fine wavy hair.

How To Determine If Your Hair Is Fine

Take a single hair and place it between your thumb and index finger. When you look away from your hands, ask yourself if you can feel that hair. If you can’t really feel the hair, then your hair is fine!

I had heard about this test early on, and had initially thought my hair was fine. However, microscopic hair analysis told me that my hairs ranged from average to thick thickness, so I believed that for a long time. I now believe the hair analysis was incorrect, and the “finger test” and my hairstylist were correct.
