How Much Product To Use On Wavy Hair

January 22, 2024 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

Does Wavy Hair Need a Lot Of Products?

Wavy hair does not require a lot of products to be styled well. In most cases, using several leave-in products will weigh down wavy hair rather than helping it look better.

How to determine how much product to use in wavy hair - how to know if you're using too much or too little, guidelines for newbies, how to adjust your usage to the weather and more.

Does Hair Type Determine How Much Product I Should Use?

How much of a product (like gel or leave in conditioner) you can or should use is impacted by your hair density. Whether or not you can or should use certain types of products (like protein treatments, curl creams, etc) is somewhat determined by your hair porosity.

I have a blog post designed to help you determine your wavy hair type if you aren’t sure what yours is.

Does Hair Type Determine What Type Of Hair Products I Should Use?

Hair texture (straight, wavy, curly or coily) can give you some really vague guidelines for how much products and what types of products you’re likely to use. For example, wavy hair is generally naturally more moisturized than curly and coily hair so it doesn’t need as much moisture, and it’s easily weighed down. It also often needs more support from a product with hold. However, these are really general rules of thumb.

Learning your hair type in terms of properties like strand thickness, porosity and density will give you more customized information about what products to use, how much of them to use, and how many products your hair can tolerate. Wavy Hair & Hair Oils

Do I Have To Use Hair Oil When Following The Curly Girl Method?

Using hair oil is not required in the curly girl method. Many oils are permitted in the curly girl method though. So, they’re an option, but not a requirement.

What Is The Purpose Of Using Hair Oils?

Hair oils are used to condition/soften the hair, add shine, lock moisture in and block out humidity out, or help break a gel cast.

Hair oils have two main purposes. One is to help soften the hair and make it more manageable. Many people think of this as ‘moisturizing’ the hair, but oils don’t actually hydrate the hair. They do make it feel softer and more manageable though. This can assist with making detangling easier, and it can just make your hair physically feel better to the touch. They sometimes also produce a slightly shiny look which people like for aesthetic reasons.

The other reason for using oils is to lock moisture in, and humidity out. Many hair oils create a really fine seal over the hair, which can help keep water and conditioning ingredients inside of the hair to keep it from getting dry or feeling rough. They also can lock humidity and other things out of your hair strands. If you live in an area with really high humidity, you may notice that your hair gets really frizzy if you go outside when its humid. This is because high humidity conditions can cause your hair to try to pull in too much water from the air, which results in frizz. Using a hair oil can help stop humidity from entering your hair, and help avoid that frizz.

Important note: Using hair oils on their own will not make your hair more moisturized and in most cases, will actually dry your hair out more! It’s a common mistake for people to use hair oils on their dry hair to try to moisturize it.

A third reason within the curly girl method world in particular, is to break a gel cast.

How Humidity And Dew Point Impact How To Care For Wavy Hair

Why Does Humidity Cause Frizz?

When it’s humid, our hair absorbs water from the air. Of course, we all recognize that when we wet our styled hair by soaking it under the showerhead, this basically resets our style. When it’s really humid out, our hair will absorb water in different areas at different rates. The areas that absorb a lot of water will reset, while the areas of our hair that stay drier may not. This is why our hair can end up frizzy, losing its curl clumps, falling flatter/straighter and just looking more messy.

Is All Wavy Hair Sensitive To Humidity?

Not necessarily. Higher porosity hair is more likely to frizz up in humidity because it will take in water more easily, and has a raised or even damaged cuticle which can make it more prone to not staying sleekly clumped with nearby hairs.

How Does Dew Point Impact Hair?

It’s commonly understood that some people’s hair gets frizzier or curlier looking when it’s humid. Dew point isn’t nearly as commonly discussed, but it’s actually a bigger factor in how your hair is impacted by the weather than humidity is.

Dew point fluctuates depending on different factors, and a high dew point is 60 Fahrenheit or higher, and a low dew point is 35 Fahrenheit or lower. The “sweet spot” for dew point is in between those two.

What Products To Use Based On Your Wavy Hair Type

March 2, 2022 by Emily Evert 11 Comments

In a recent blog post, I shared how to determine your wavy hair type. I had mistyped my own hair for a long time, and that resulted in me thinking products ‘should’ work for my hair that didn’t. If you missed that post, definitely go check it out to double-check that you’ve got your hair type correct.

Once You Know Your Hair Type, How Do You Know What Products To Use?

Now you know what your hair properties are – hooray! That’s great…how do you know what products to use now though, right? That’s what this blog post is all about!

What products your hair likes primarily will come down to four factors.

  1. How much protein to use
  2. How much moisture you need (or can tolerate)
  3. How often you’ll need to clarify your hair
  4. How much hold you’ll need.
