Short Or Long Wavy Hair? The Pros And Cons Of Each!

I recently had my sister help me perform an at-home bob haircut. I flimed the process for my YouTube channel if you want to check it out.

Since she did this cut for me, I have really loved having my hair shorter again, but at other phases in my naturally wavy hair journey I have really loved having longer hair. I thought I’d share the pros and cons of short and long wavy hair, from my perspective.

Why short wavy hair is better

Less likely to tangle as shorter hair is younger hair that tends to be healthier
You have less hair so you’l use less conditioner, gel, mousse, etc which can save money over time.
Can feel cooler in hot or humid weather
Dries faster
May get tighter curls
Can look thicker/fuller

In the past I’ve written on this blog about how I saw a Devacut curl specialist and that experience wasn’t great. I also shared how I saw a second Devacut curl specialist who had more experience with wavy hair, and that experience was really good.

I haven’t yet talked about do it yourself haircuts! For the first couple years that I was following the curly girl method, I cut my own hair using a dry curl cut, curl by curl technique. I wrote about this on my blog EmilyReviews, before this blog existed. I used that technique several times but I never documented it with much detail because I wasn’t regularly blogging about my hair back then.

As someone who is naturally somewhat frugal, I love the idea of being able to cut my own hair. While I did really like the second curl specialist that I saw, I don’t love the price tag of those haircuts, at around $140.

I had considered trying a regular wet cut at a regular salon, even though I had a series of awful haircuts basically my whole life prior to age 24 or so, when I started embracing my waves. I think the main reason why wet cuts didn’t go as planned for me much of my life was due to not realizing that my hair was wavy and not understanding what techniques would and wouldn’t work sell on my hair type. So I think I could get a successful wet cut now…but I decided to try a new (to me) type of do it yourself haircut, instead. The pigtail haircut that Manes By Mell has a tutorial on. Signs That Your Wavy Hair Needs A Haircut

You can see or feel split ends.

Your hair has started tangling more than usual, especially at the ends, or in single-strand knots aka fairy knots.

Your hair feels heavy, and may give you headaches if you wear it up.

Your hair has gotten straighter or isn’t curling up as well as it used to.

The ends of your hair look stringy or have become uneven.

Your waves aren’t clumping as well as they used to or look “stringy”

It’s been more than 6 months since your last trim.

The shape that your haircut had when first cut is no longer the shape it has. For many with wavy hair they’ll get a “triangle” shape or their hair cut will become “bottom heavy” as it grows out.

My Experience Seeing A “Wavy Specialist Vs A Curly Specialist

My curl specialist experience last year

If you’ve been following me for a while you may recall my 2021 haircut. I saw a Deva certified stylist with over 20 years of experience and it didn’t go well. In part, I didn’t communicate as well as I should have. In part…the stylist just didn’t seem to understand my hair type. The collage below shows my before (first row), my “just got home from the salon” (second row) and my first attempt to style it myself (third row).

After that experience last year, I initially thought I’d go back to cutting my own hair again. After a while though I started daydreaming about trying a dry curl cut again. For a while I was thinking I’d try out a Ouidad cut or rezo cut rather than another Devacut. Then I found Locks By Alaina out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She’s a Deva certified stylist which wasn’t what I thought I was looking for but…

Alaina has wavy hair herself, and her Instagram is full of clients who also have wavy hair. I was pretty immediately interested, but what really hooked me was when she posted something about how wavy hair often needs strong hold. If there’s one piece of information that people seem to get wrong about wavy hair most often, it’s the idea that wavy hair doesn’t need gel or doesn’t do well work hard hold.

If you go to the hair section of most any store and look for products that say ‘wavy’ you’ll mostly find texturizing sprays or other very light hold products…so it even seems to be a prevalent idea in product marketing. Anyway…I knew she would understand my hair type, so I was pretty much sold. Let me be clear that she doesn’t advertise herself as a wavy specialist.

I just framed this post that way on my own, because I could see that she has more experience and knowledge with wavy hair than the other stylist I went to…and I think probably more than your average Devacurl specialist, but I am guessing.
