Do I Have To Use Hair Oil When Following The Curly Girl Method?

Using hair oil is not required in the curly girl method. Many oils are permitted in the curly girl method though. So, they’re an option, but not a requirement.

What Is The Purpose Of Using Hair Oils?

Hair oils are used to condition/soften the hair, add shine, lock moisture in and block out humidity out, or help break a gel cast.

Hair oils have two main purposes. One is to help soften the hair and make it more manageable. Many people think of this as ‘moisturizing’ the hair, but oils don’t actually hydrate the hair. They do make it feel softer and more manageable though. This can assist with making detangling easier, and it can just make your hair physically feel better to the touch. They sometimes also produce a slightly shiny look which people like for aesthetic reasons.

The other reason for using oils is to lock moisture in, and humidity out. Many hair oils create a really fine seal over the hair, which can help keep water and conditioning ingredients inside of the hair to keep it from getting dry or feeling rough. They also can lock humidity and other things out of your hair strands. If you live in an area with really high humidity, you may notice that your hair gets really frizzy if you go outside when its humid. This is because high humidity conditions can cause your hair to try to pull in too much water from the air, which results in frizz. Using a hair oil can help stop humidity from entering your hair, and help avoid that frizz.

Important note: Using hair oils on their own will not make your hair more moisturized and in most cases, will actually dry your hair out more! It’s a common mistake for people to use hair oils on their dry hair to try to moisturize it.

A third reason within the curly girl method world in particular, is to break a gel cast.

Causes Of Wavy Hair Breakage & How To Stop It

What Causes Wavy Hair Breakage?

Bleach damage is the most damaging thing you can do to your hair. Once you have bleached your hair, think of it as significantly weaker than it used to be. It got somewhat damaged in th e process of bleaching, but it’ll also continue to receive more damage now, because it is weaker your hair will become more damaged by the sun, mechanical damage, shampooing, etc than healthier hair would experience.

Chemical treatments like perms or straightening treatments do significant damage to the hair as well, second only do bleaching.

Heat damage such as using a curling iron or flat iron.

Mechanical damage from combing, brushing, friction from hats, pillows, etc. When you comb or brush, doing so with a wide tooth comb first and working from the bottom up can help minimize breakage. Try to avoid “tearing through” knots.

Sun damage. Bleached hair or naturally light hair (whether blonde, gray or silver/white) are more prone to damage from the sun because it has less melanin and melanin is made of proteins that protect hair from UV damage.

Too much protein. If you use way more protein than your hair needs, this can cause your hair to become so brittle that it can break.

Shampooing can be damaging, primarily to hair that is high porosity.

Medical conditions such as thyroid problems, malnutrition, extreme stress or some scalp conditions can lead to breakage.

Hair commercials always show off extremely shiny hair. Whether we wanted to “buy in” to it or not, we’ve all been somewhat conditioned to think that shiny hair is the ideal. The truth is, that shiny hair can be a sign of healthier hair. If your goal is healthier hair, then paying attention to how shiny (or not) your hair is can make some sense.

Shark HyperAIR Hair Dryer Review On Wavy Hair

June 2, 2023 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

In wavy and curly hair communities, there are two hair dryers that most people talk about wanting. One is the Dyson Supersonic, which I did a Dyson Supersonic On Wavy Hair review of a long time ago. The Dyson is the most expensive hair dryer out there, and I think generally seen as the best. However, the sometimes people will argue that the Shark is actually just as good, or even better, at a lower price point.

I’ve always wondered if the Shark really could be as good or even better than the Dyson, given that it sells for about half the cost. In my Dyson review I shared how I don’t love the diffuser attachment that comes with the Dyson. As someone with wavy hair, the diffuser is a big deal as I use it each time I do my hair. Plus, the Dyson is designed to have magnetic attachments, so diffusers or attachments from other blow dryers don’t work with it unless you get really creative with finding a way to make the attachment stay in place.

The Shark HyperAIR comes with a diffuser that I thought looked a lot better, which was one of the top reasons I was interested in trying the dryer. I didn’t want to pay full price for it, but I watched eBay until I found a working model that was around $60 shipped and jumped on that! I did make sure that it was real and not a knockoff.
