How To Make The Curly Girl Method Transition Phase Easier

June 3, 2022 by Emily Evert 1 Comment

I recently did a blog post about the curly girl method transition phase where I explained what it was, and answered some other related questions. A common question that I didn’t answer in that post is basically ‘how can I survive the transition phase?”. I thought that question was big enough to warrant its own post.

How To Make The Curly Girl Transition Phase More Tolerable

1. Wash your hair when you need to!

This is the biggest one, in my opinion. What makes the transition phase so challenging for many people is they decide they absolutely can’t wash their hair more than once every three days or four days or whatever timeframe. I do believe that it’s good to work on getting your hair used to being washed less frequently because daily shampooing can be drying. I don’t believe that the only way to “train” your hair to produce less oils is to go from daily washing to once-a-week washing.

Prior to trying the curly girl method I had been a daily washer, so I started by just moving to every other day at first. That was tolerable, 3+ days would not have been tolerable for me. I would have been insecure about how my hair looked, and felt. It wasn’t worth it to me!

Plus, if I just really messed up a wash day? I’d sometimes get right back in the shower and rewash just an hour after I washed the first time. I wasn’t willing to hate my hair the entire time between wash days, and one “extra” shampoo experience isn’t going to leave your hair super dry or otherwise cause major problems. If you’re itching to wash your hair – just wash it, you’ll be happier and your hair will be okay.

2. Set realistic goals.

Curly Girl Method Transition Questions And Answers

May 25, 2022 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

Does the curly girl method make your hair look worse before it looks better?

If your hair was heat or chemically damaged before starting the curly girl method, you may find that your hair looks worse for a while before it looks better. If your hair has minimal damage then you should be able to get good results as soon as you figure out the basics of your curly girl routine.

In this case, I’m referring to how healthy (shiny, bouncy, etc) your hair looks and feels, as well as how well it curls. Sometimes people think that part of the ‘worse before it gets better’ phase involves your hair looking greasy/oily or weighed down. In my opinion, that should be able to be avoided.

How To Test If Your Hair Is Wavy {Before Starting The Curly Girl Method}

October 10, 2020 by Emily Evert 81 Comments

So, you’ve seen the TikTok trend. Or maybe you’ve seen YouTube videos? Either way, you’ve caught on that some people think they have straight hair, but discover that their hair is actually wavy or curly after trying the curly girl method. You’ve started to suspect that your hair might be wavy or curly too.

Yet…the curly girl method seems too complicated, right? It certainly can be. I’m over 2 years in myself, and I still find myself shocked at how many products and how many steps some people put into their haircare routines. Curly girl approved products can be expensive, as well. I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t want to spend money if you aren’t sure this is even right for your hair type.

I have a blog post that discusses signs that your hair is naturally wavy which can help you decide if you want to test it. Once you’re ready and you want a quick and easy way to test if your hair is actually wavy? Here is what to do, step by step.

Wavy hair Product Application Techniques Compared | Scruching, raking, roping, combing, glazing, prayer hands

May 19, 2022 by Emily Evert 5 Comments

“How do you apply your products?” is a question that I’ve received in comments and emails a few times. I’ve wanted to answer this question, but I thought it made sense to share different application techniques rather than making an entire blog post about one method. For the last few weeks I’ve been testing product application methods, so that I could compare them for you all.

How To Apply Products On Wavy Hair (Video)

While I’m sharing them here in written form with photos, I’ve also documented these with video. If you might find it easier to understand these application techniques by seeing me do them, check out my tiktok video or YouTube video that I made showing all six techniques and the results.

For the sake of trying to keep results ‘fair’, each wash day I washed my hair with the same shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and mousse. I attempted to use the same amount of product, and the same routine and techniques other than how I applied the mousse each time. My goal was to try to make make it so that the only differences in these wash days was the product application technique. I prefer damp styling usually, so I plopped for 10 minutes each time and then added mousse.

Six methods for applying hair products to wavy hair explained and compared with results photos and video. Find out how to do scrunching, roping, raking, prayer hands, combing and glazing.

How To Scrunch Gel Into Wavy Hair

Scrunching is when you place your hands under your hair and raise your hands so tha your hair pools into your palms. Once you reach the top of your hair, you squeeze your hand closed, “scrunching” the hair that is in your palm. This is often done without product as a way of encouraging waves/curls to form. However, it can also be done as a product application technique.
