Wavy Curly Influencers With Your Hair Type

September 9, 2022 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

When I was new to the curly girl method, I looked for someone with a similar curl pattern to mine. I thought if I found someone else with loosely wavy hair and followed their routine, it should work for me. Spoiler alert – it didn’t! I later found out this was largely due to differences in our hair type. While we both had wavy hair, we had different thickness, density and porosity.

Finding a blogger or YouTuber or TikTokker or Instagram person with your hair properties can be really helpful. I thought I’d put together a list of wavy and/or curly influencers or content creators and their hair types. Hopefully this can help you find people who have hair really similar to yours, if not your exact hair type.

Not Sure Of Your Hair Type?

If you aren’t sure of your own hair type, check out my post how to determine your wavy hair type.

How To Get More Defined Waves In Naturally Wavy Hair

October 28, 2022 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

What Makes Hair Look Defined?

Before we get into how to get more defined waves, let’s talk about what ‘defined waves’ even means! It is a phrase that can be confusing and sometimes misused. For example, I’ve seen people use defined waves to mean “tighter waves” which is incorrect.

Defined waves are basically well-clumped waves. You could think of it as having waves that are “outlined” well. If someone has well-defined waves, you could use two fingers to pick out one curl from their hair, or you could go around their head counting how many individual curls there are.

Well-defined naturally wavy hair has…

  • Less frizz
  • Natural definition or hold (not fluffy or poofy)
  • Visible curl clumps
  • Separated, individual waves.

Wavy Hair & Hard Water

What Is Hard Water?

Magnesium and calcium are the most abundant metals found in tap water. When we talk about hard water it’s usually high calcium and magnesium. Approximately 85% of homes in the US have hard water.

Why Is Hard Water Bad For Wavy Hair?

Hard water is rough on hair in general, but it isn’t worse for wavy hair than other types of hair. Instead, it’s particularly bad for damaged hair.

Hard water can be especially hard on damaged hair because damaged hair allows hard water to bond to it better than healthier hair. It can also cause more trouble for fine hair that is prone to buildup, or hair that is naturally dry like curly or coily hair. Causes buildup which can lead to dry hair or hair that feels producty, and greasy while also feeling dry.

Hard water can do more damage if the PH level of your water is higher. The higher the PH, the more minerals can bond to your hair.

How To Care For Low Porosity Wavy Hair

Hair porosity and pinecone analogy

What Is Low Porosity Hair?

Low porosity hair is hair that has tightly closed hair cuticles. Our hair cuticle is often compared to a pinecone (closed for low porosity, open for high porosity). Another analogy for the hair cuticle is a shingled roof, with a newly made roof being low porosity, and a roof with some raised/curling shingles and/or missing shingles being high porosity.

Having a tight, closed cuticle means that once water gets into your hair strand, it’s likely to stay nice and hydrated as the tight cuticle will be great at holding water in your hair. It may be harder for water and hair product ingredients to get into your hair though. For this reason, some with low porosity hair struggle with dry hair while others with low porosity hair struggle with over-moisturized hair.

If you have low porosity hair and aren’t successful at getting water and products into your hair strands, it can become dry. If you have low porosity hair and are successful at getting water and products into your hair strands, it can become over-moisturized.
