Curly Girl Method Products On Amazon

January 28, 2023 by Emily Evert 1 Comment

There are affiliate links in this post.

If you’re looking to start the curly girl method by shopping on Amazon, it’s easy to overspend. Hair products tend to be heavy which means shipping them isn’t cheap. Due to this, hair products are often marked up in price on Amazon – sometimes significantly! If you’re wanting to avoid overspending, this post is for you. I’ve gathered different categories of curly girl method approved products that you can buy on Amazon that aren’t overpriced vs their in-store prices.

Tips for buying curly girl method products on Amazon:

Check the prices with your local store websites if you aren’t sure of their typical price. Some lower-end hair products are really overpriced on Amazon! In some cases, 4x their regular price or so! It can be really wild.

Check which amazon store or amazon seller you’re buying from. Try to purchase directly from the brand or from a reputable retailer.

Are there counterfeit products sold on amazon as the real thing?

I’ve bought several hair products on Amazon that I had also bought locally or from major retailers like Ulta in the past. I have never received anything from Amazon that seemed fake in any way. So, I’ve always wondered why some people refuse to buy hair products on Amazon due to fears of ‘fake products’.

I’ve wondered if that was even a real thing that happens. Business Insider did a story on it, so it really can happen. They said it happens on items purchased on Walmart.com, too. This is why I gave the tip above of shopping from a brand or amazon seller that you know is legit rather than a random third party reseller.

Are Curly girl method products more expensive on amazon?

Often times curly hair products are more expensive on Amazon, but not always. If you’re watching your budget, you just want to be mindful of the regular price of an item and check the amazon price. Additionally, the cost of items on Amazon can change at any time.

What is Cowashing?

Cowashing is using a regular conditioner or a specifically formulated “cleansing conditioner” or “cowash” to wash your scalp and hair instead of shampoo.

Conditioner washing (aka cowashing) wavy hair. Can conditioner clean your hair? Does cowashing work on wavy hair? Can you use a regular conditioner or do you have to buy a cowash? How often should you cowash? These & other questions answered

Is Your Hair Actually Wavy Or Are You Forcing It? | Wavy Imposter Syndrome

Is Your Hair Actually Wavy Or Are You Forcing It?

This question, or ones related to it, are really common to see in wavy hair communities online. After people find the curly girl method or test if their hair is wavy, they may even have others around them tell them their hair isn’t actually wavy. If your hair didn’t look wavy when you were brushing it after the shower and using no products…some will see it as ‘forcing it’ if you can use wavy hair techniques and get your hair to look wavy.

In this post I’m going to attempt to tackle various questions related to worrying if your hair is really wavy or if you’re just forcing it to look wavy. When someone worries about having ‘fake’ wavy hair this is often referred to as wavy imposter syndrome.

Is your hair really wavy or are you forcing it to look wavy? Do you hae to diffuse? Use gel? Use other hair products? Scrunch? To get waves? And if so, does that mean your hair is wavy or is it straight?

What Does “True” Curl Pattern Mean Anyway?

Before diving into specific questions I see posted about “is my hair is ‘really’ wavy if….” I think we need to address whether anyone really has just one curl type. Personally, I think anyone with textured hair is going to be capable of achieving at least two different curl patterns depending on how they style their hair.

For example, even someone with tightly curly hair were to wash their hair, brush it and let it air dry, they’d likely get looser curls and less definition vs if they applied gel, didn’t brush, and diffused their hair.

Also, many people will find that their hair varies in curl pattern depending on the humidity, or how long it’s been since wash day. For some, the farther they get from wash day, the looser their waves or curls will become. For others, as their hair gets dirtier or greasier their hair will curl up better thanks to that added grit or added moisture.

Many people also have uneven curl patterns, so even on the same day, they will have a range of curl patterns on their head. Even for the straightest hair type (1A) they are likely to be able to get their hair to 1B if they scrunch and use products with hold. Also, our protein and moisture balance can make a difference! Many people will see their hair get straighter if their hair is in need of protein.

My larger point is that curl tightness varies for most anyone/everyone. So rather than having one “true” look to your hair, maybe we should all try to think of our hair as having a spectrum of possibilities. This isn’t unique to wavy hair…but perhaps it’s more confusing with wavy hair if the spectrum of possibilities includes some points on the straight spectrum and some on the wavy spectrum (Such as a range of 1C to 2B or something).

In my view, failing to remember that all hair has a spectrum of possibilities is what causes a lot of the confusion surrounding wavy imposter syndrome.

Trying Prose Customized Hair Products On My Wavy Hair

January 7, 2023 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

I was given the opportunity to try Prose hair products for review. I didn’t pay to buy these products. I’m not being paid to write this review. My intention is to do my best to be as unbiased as possible when doing reviews, even when the products were sent to me.

Prose Custom Hair Products On Wavy Hair Review

In the wavy and curly hair groups that I hang out in, every once in a while people start threads asking about custom haircare options. Many people get to a point where they feel like they’ve tried a lot of products and wonder if getting something custom-made would be a good route to take.

In the past I tried Function Of Beauty. FOB makes semi-customizable products that are sold at Target, and then fully customizable products on their website. I did a Function Of Beauty Review that featured the fully customized products if you want to check that out. I was curious to see how Prose products may compare to Function Of Beauty, as these two brands are the two I most often see discussed when customized hair care is brought up.

I took the haircare survey which asked me about my hair and my routine. They factor in things like your curl texture, hair strand thickness, how simple or elaborate of a routine you’re comfortable with, and more. You’re also able to share your hair goals and they factor those in as well. From my results, I was sent a pre-shampoo, a shampoo, a conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, and a curl cream. I requested that my products be made silicone-free. All Prose products are sulfate-free, and also free of parabens, mineral oils, gluten, dyes, GMOs, and animal cruelty.
