Wavy Hair Myths: Debunking Common Misconceptions About Your Hair Texture

Common Wavy Hair Myths

Correcting wavy hair myths

Wavy Hair Is Easy To Manage

Some people with wavy hair have easy-to-manage hair. Other people with wavy hair have to keep up with a lot of maintenance to keep their locks looking good. Some with wavy hair have minimal frizz and are able to simply wash, condition and air-dry their hair and have it look nice. Others with wavy hair find themselves in this in-between place where if they wash and condition their hair, it’ll be frizzy and poofy, so to get it to have defined, low-frizz waves they have to use products and diffuse their hair dry, among other things.

Wavy Hair Is “The Best Of Both Worlds”

I’ve seen people with straight hair and with curly hair say this…that wavy hair is the ‘best’ hair type because you can easily make it look and act straight, or you can easily make it look or act curly. This may be true for some with wavy hair, but it’s definitely the minority, if it is true!

Some with wavy hair can brush their hair after a shower and get their hair to look like nice straight hair. However, those people usually have to put in a lot of effort to get their hair to have nice, defined waves.

Likewise, some people with wavy hair can pretty easily get their hair to look curly (perhaps by just adding in a curl cream or something), but those people would usually have to put a lot of effort in to get their hair to look nice straight.

Personally, my hair doesn’t quite look good if I brush it, it looks like ‘bad’ straight hair rather than nice straight hair, yet it also takes a lot of effort to embraces my waves. Definitely not the best of both worlds for me!

Signs that your wavy hair needs a hair cut

April 1, 2023 by Emily Evert 2 Comments

signs that your naturally wavy hair needs to be cut or trimmed

Signs That Your Wavy Hair Needs A Haircut

You can see or feel split ends.

Your hair has started tangling more than usual, especially at the ends, or in single-strand knots aka fairy knots.

Your hair feels heavy, and may give you headaches if you wear it up.

Your hair has gotten straighter or isn’t curling up as well as it used to.

The ends of your hair look stringy or have become uneven.

Your waves aren’t clumping as well as they used to or look “stringy”

It’s been more than 6 months since your last trim.

The shape that your haircut had when first cut is no longer the shape it has. For many with wavy hair they’ll get a “triangle” shape or their hair cut will become “bottom heavy” as it grows out.

How To Care For Thin Low Density Wavy Hair

March 24, 2023 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

What Is Low-Density Wavy Hair?

Hair density refers to how many hairs you have. Someone with low density hair would have fewer hairs per square inch of scalp than someone with medium or high density hair.

What’s The Difference Between Thin Wavy Hair and Fine Wavy Hair?

People often confuse thin hair, fine hair, and low-density hair! Thin hair and low-density hair mean the same thing. So thin hair means someone who has a lower amount of hairs across their scalp than “average”. Where fine wavy hair means that the individual hair strands are not as thick as ‘average’.

low density or thin naturally wavy hair - how to care for it, how common it is, tips and tricks for hiding your scalp and more

How To Tell If You Have Low-Density Hair

Hair density is primarily determined by analyzing how much of your scalp you can see. People with high-density hair can see very little of their scalp even when their hair is wet. People with low-density hair tend to have a wider/more visible part and can see more scalp when their hair is wet.

Another way to estimate your hair density is to look at your ponytail circumference. I have a blog post that goes into detail about how to determine your wavy hair type which covers density.

Ouidad Review On Wavy Hair

March 18, 2023 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

Ouidad sent me products for review. All opinions are my own.

Ouidad styling products review

Many of you know that I typically recommend really affordable products. I think of myself as frugal, but not cheap. What I mean by that is, I like seeking out value. However, that doesn’t mean that I look for the absolute cheapest products available, necessarily. I’m often happy to pay more for one product over another in the same category, as long as I feel like the more expensive product has something unique that it offers. If two products perform the same, then I’m going to go with the cheaper option.

Ouidad is a brand that is a bit higher-end than most of what I’ve used in the past, but that is popular with many people who have wavy and c urly hair. I had purchased a Ouidad gel on my own during an Ulta hair sale where the gel was offered at 50% off. So, when Ouidad reached out to me to see if I wanted to try out some of their products, I was happy to agree. They sent me four products, so I’m going to review each of those. I’m also going to cover the gel that I had purchased from Ouidad on my own.
