Shark HyperAIR Hair Dryer Review On Wavy Hair

June 2, 2023 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

In wavy and curly hair communities, there are two hair dryers that most people talk about wanting. One is the Dyson Supersonic, which I did a Dyson Supersonic On Wavy Hair review of a long time ago. The Dyson is the most expensive hair dryer out there, and I think generally seen as the best. However, the sometimes people will argue that the Shark is actually just as good, or even better, at a lower price point.

I’ve always wondered if the Shark really could be as good or even better than the Dyson, given that it sells for about half the cost. In my Dyson review I shared how I don’t love the diffuser attachment that comes with the Dyson. As someone with wavy hair, the diffuser is a big deal as I use it each time I do my hair. Plus, the Dyson is designed to have magnetic attachments, so diffusers or attachments from other blow dryers don’t work with it unless you get really creative with finding a way to make the attachment stay in place.

The Shark HyperAIR comes with a diffuser that I thought looked a lot better, which was one of the top reasons I was interested in trying the dryer. I didn’t want to pay full price for it, but I watched eBay until I found a working model that was around $60 shipped and jumped on that! I did make sure that it was real and not a knockoff.

How to Care for Gray, Silver, or White Wavy Hair

May 26, 2023 by Emily Evert 2 Comments

This is a guest post from Angela Norman.

If you have wavy hair that’s gray, silver, or white in color, you may be clueless as to the best ways to care for it. Having naturally wavy hair is enough to know that you need to be specific in your routine, but when you have hair embracing aging gracefully, learning to love and care for your gray, silver, or white strands can lead to making some changes.

Naturally wavy hair can require some extra steps within your hair care routine, but when it’s light in color due to aging or going blonde, some other hair products can help. Regular trims are essential for all hair types since no product can help split ends once they begin to occur.

Maybe your waves are starting to go gray, or as a natural blonde, you’re beginning to notice the lighter white and silver-colored strands. Or maybe you long for that bleached-white look, so you’re working with a hair care professional at the salon to dye and color your hair.

Of course, you still have to take care of your wavy light color at home since you can’t afford to go to the salon that often. Let’s dive into some commonly asked questions on caring for your gray/silver/white hair.

Trying The Manes By Mell Pigtail DIY HairCut On Loosely Wavy Hair

May 13, 2023 by Emily Evert 4 Comments

In the past I’ve written on this blog about how I saw a Devacut curl specialist and that experience wasn’t great. I also shared how I saw a second Devacut curl specialist who had more experience with wavy hair, and that experience was really good.

I haven’t yet talked about do it yourself haircuts! For the first couple years that I was following the curly girl method, I cut my own hair using a dry curl cut, curl by curl technique. I wrote about this on my blog EmilyReviews, before this blog existed. I used that technique several times but I never documented it with much detail because I wasn’t regularly blogging about my hair back then.

As someone who is naturally somewhat frugal, I love the idea of being able to cut my own hair. While I did really like the second curl specialist that I saw, I don’t love the price tag of those haircuts, at around $140.

I had considered trying a regular wet cut at a regular salon, even though I had a series of awful haircuts basically my whole life prior to age 24 or so, when I started embracing my waves. I think the main reason why wet cuts didn’t go as planned for me much of my life was due to not realizing that my hair was wavy and not understanding what techniques would and wouldn’t work sell on my hair type. So I think I could get a successful wet cut now…but I decided to try a new (to me) type of do it yourself haircut, instead. The pigtail haircut that Manes By Mell has a tutorial on. I’ll embed that video below.

How Humidity And Dew Point Impact How To Care For Wavy Hair

Why Does Humidity Cause Frizz?

When it’s humid, our hair absorbs water from the air. Of course, we all recognize that when we wet our styled hair by soaking it under the showerhead, this basically resets our style. When it’s really humid out, our hair will absorb water in different areas at different rates. The areas that absorb a lot of water will reset, while the areas of our hair that stay drier may not. This is why our hair can end up frizzy, losing its curl clumps, falling flatter/straighter and just looking more messy.

Is All Wavy Hair Sensitive To Humidity?

Not necessarily. Higher porosity hair is more likely to frizz up in humidity because it will take in water more easily, and has a raised or even damaged cuticle which can make it more prone to not staying sleekly clumped with nearby hairs.

How Does Dew Point Impact Hair?

It’s commonly understood that some people’s hair gets frizzier or curlier looking when it’s humid. Dew point isn’t nearly as commonly discussed, but it’s actually a bigger factor in how your hair is impacted by the weather than humidity is.

Dew point fluctuates depending on different factors, and a high dew point is 60 Fahrenheit or higher, and a low dew point is 35 Fahrenheit or lower. The “sweet spot” for dew point is in between those two.
