18 Ways To Make Wavy Hair Curlier

September 27, 2020 by Emily Evert 7 Comments

Everyone wants something a little different than what they get, or so the old adage goes. It’s common for people with naturally wavy hair to want to know how to make wavy hair curlier. Maybe they’re a 2a looking to achieve 2c waves.

Maybe they’re a 2c looking to step into the 3-range with “real” curls. Or maybe they don’t have a specific curl type goal in mind, but they’re just trying to enhance their natural hair pattern as much as they can. Whichever of those might be you, this post is for you!

How To Make Wavy Hair Curlier

To make wavy hair curlier scrunch your hair while in the shower, and then diffuse instead of air dry so that it dries quicker and tighter. Use lightweight products to keep hair light. Make sure your hair has enough protein. Curl enhancers can tighten your pattern, too.

That’s the short answer. The long answer is to follow with 18 specific ways you can make your wavy hair curlier. Before getting into those in detail I want to say that curly hair is not objectively better than wavy hair. However, I fully support people choosing hair that make them feel best.

If that means their hair when they just wash it and brush it, I think that’s great. If they feel best when they straighten or curl their hair, that’s great too. If they fall somewhere in the ‘natural’ haircare range, that’s just as good.

I see none of these or objectively better or worse than the others. I’m writing this post because I know there are many wavies out there who want to tighten their pattern. If that’s what makes you happy, I’m happy to try to help you out.

Okay, now that we’ve established that all hair patterns are good hair patterns – on with the 18 ways, broken into a few categories.

Wavy Hair Advantages and Disadvantages

September 26, 2020 by Emily Evert Leave a Comment

I thought my hair was straight until a couple of years ago. I treated it like it was straight, and mostly made it look straight by unknowingly brushing and otherwise destroying my waves.

For people who have known me for longer than the last couple of years, it can seem to them like my hair became wavy after being straight. Most people aren’t very familiar with wavy hair and how it has to be treated delicately to maintain the waves in a lot of cases.

It’s complicated to try to explain to them that I am not curling my hair, didn’t have my hair chemically treated, and that my haircare products aren’t crazy-powerful wave-making products or something.

It’s common for people to think that when people who previously thought their hair was straight start embracing their natural waves, that they just wanted wavy hair all along.

For some, that’s true, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, for me, it’s not as simple as preferring wavy hair. In fact, most of my life I thought I wanted really straight, sleek hair. Instead, I had straight but poofy and frizzy hair.

I feel that there are advantages and disadvantages of naturally wavy hair. I’ve seen others list pros and cons of wavy hair that weren’t true to my experience. For example, I’ve seen people say that wavy hair is the best hair type because it can be worn straight or curly depending on whether you brush it or not. That just isn’t true for me.

Why Hair Is Wavy When Wet But Dries Straight

Signs that straight hair is actually curly

This was my wet hair when I was about 14. My whole life, my hair has been wavy when wet but straight once dry. Somehow, it never occurred to me to think twice about it! My hair was straight when it dried, so it was straight..or so I thought for the first 26 years of my life. It turned out, I have naturally wavy hair and just never knew it.

When I first discovered that my hair was naturally wavy and found the curly girl method, I was confused by hearing “Do not brush wavy hair!”. I had spent my whole life brushing my hair after getting out of the shower, and at the start of each day, at minimum.

I also grew up hearing things like “Your hair is a mess, it needs brushed!” So, I thought of brushing your hair as an essential part of taking care of your hair and keeping it from looking bad.

For those of you who are where I was a few years ago, I wanted to dive deeper into why you shouldn’t brush wavy hair. Hopefully, this will help you understand the benefits of not brushing wavy hair.
