10 mousse brands tested head-to-head on my wavy hair (with pics!)

best mousse for wavy hair tested and ranked best for longevity, volume, definition, frizz, hold, value and more! Plus results photos for each mousse.

I spent the first two years of the curly girl method using gel. The first gel I ever tried was LA Looks gel. It worked well and it’s super affordable. I just didn’t see a reason to try anything else for quite a while.

I don’t even remember why, but one day I decided to try mousse. I noticed that I had better root volume and my hair dried faster. I have very dense hair and was used to diffusing for over an hour. Cutting over 20 minutes off my diffusing time felt like a huge benefit.

Once again, I stuck with the same product for quite a long time. It was working well, so why change things up, I thought. Then the frugal side of me started wondering if I could get similar results from a cheaper mousse.

At first, testing different mousses on my wavy hair was just for my own experimentation. Then I realized I could make this into a resource for others. So I went back and re-used some for the sake of taking pictures and making detailed notes on the results.

Marketing does not do a very good job of letting you know what you’ll really get from a mousse, in my opinion. For example “level 3 hold” doesn’t mean much if you have never used that brand before. I thought a detailed mousse comparison could be really helpful.

To try to ensure that my results weren’t based on my routine, I used the same hair routine as closely as possible each time I tested a mousse.

Normal Hair Loss With The Curly Girl Method On Wavy Hair

October 18, 2020 by Emily Evert 2 Comments

I started the curly girl method when I was 26 years old. Up to that point I thought my hair was straight and treated it like straight hair. My whole life, I always thought I lost a lot of hair in the shower. When I started the curly girl method, the amount of hair I was seeing in the drain scared me.

Does the curly girl method make your hair fall out?

The curly girl method shouldn’t cause hair loss. If you are new to using gel or other products with hold, it will seem like you are losing more hair in the shower because it doesn’t fall off your head between showers. This can cause your normal hair shedding to be more visible to you.

I now understand that the curly girl method never increased the frequency of my hair loss. Honestly, it’s not even proper to call it hair loss. It’s really just hair fall or hair shedding.

Does the curly girl method cause hairloss? How much hair shedding is normal?

DIY Gelatin Cheap Protein Treatment For Wavy Hair {Before & After Results}

One aspect of natural wavy hair care is finding out how to strike the ideal balance between moisture and protein for your hair. As a general rule of thumb, hair that has been dyed, chemically treated or has heat damage will like a lot of protein. On the other hand, hair that hasn’t been damaged usually requires less protein.

Based on this general rule of thumb, I assumed my hair wouldn’t need much protein. I haven’t dyed or chemically treated my hair in close to a decade. I don’t curl or straight iron my hair, though I do diffuse it, it’s never on high heat.

Surpringly, my hair still loves protein! I can get over-moisturized pretty easily and that’s when I know to give my hair more protein.

You’ve used gel or mousse after a shower and have let your hair dry. You have a great, hard cast over your hair. Everything seems to be going well until you try to break the cast. You squeeze, you scrunch, and your hair stays crunchy. You scrunch some more, and maybe it gets a little softer, but mostly? It’s still crunchy.

Fear not, there are a few more things you can try to get this cast out of your hair!
