Upside down VS Right-side Up Wavy Hair Styling

November 15, 2020 by Emily Evert 9 Comments

Upside down vs right-side up styling for wavy hair. Which is better? #curlygirlmethod

When watching curly girl method forums or groups, I often see discussions about right-side up vs upside down styling for wavy hair. I have experimented a bit with both, but primarily style upside down.

I thought a comparison post might be helpful for those who are new or who have only experienced one way or the other. To make sure I got as fair of a comparison as possible, I took pictures on two wash days. I used the same shampoo, conditioner and mousse both times.

I used Zotos All About Curls no lather shampoo and daily cream conditioner, and Suave captivating curls mousse both days. I was a bit weighed down both wash days, with flatter roots and my curl pattern starting lower on my head than usual. I think the Zotos are just too heavy for me. Still, I thought the results were worth sharing.Continue Reading

how to make wavy hair straighter

This blog focuses on embracing naturally wavy hair, so this is a bit of a unique topic for this blog. I know that some people with wavy hair do want to make their hair more straight, though.

Plus, I have the post how to make wavy hair curlier. In that post I talked about how I don’t think there is any hierarchy of good/better/best hair patterns. So while it’s fine to want curlier hair, it’s also fine to want straighter hair. I did the ‘curlier’ post, so I thought I’d do the ‘straighter’ post, too.

While I prefer to embrace my waves these days, for many years I preferred straighter hair. From about age 13 to 23 I didn’t actually recognize my hair was wavy, but I wanted sleeker, smoother, straighter hair.

If that’s you, I totally get it! Nothing wrong with having those preferences. I straightened my hair daily for many years, but I also utilized other tips and tricks to make my hair sleeker. There were other things I was doing to help straighten out my hair that I didn’t even realize was doing it. Anyway, here are all the ways I know of to make wavy hair straighter.

Does the curly girl method work for wavy hair?

Many people with wavy hair have good results from following the curly girl method. You may find that your hair does better with slight modifications to the curly girl method, though.

I’ve said on this blog before that treating wavy hair like curly hair is going to give better results than treating it like straight hair. I certainly believe that to be true in a general sense. I am much happier with the look and feel of my waves after I started the curly girl method. I believe my hair to be much healthier now, too.

Yet, wavy hair is unique from curly hair in some ways. While I would generally recommend that people with wavy hair try out the curly girl method, I think they may need to make some modifications. Learning your wavy hair type can help you to pinpoint what products and routines will work best for you.

Let me back up a bit though…
