Do I Have To Use Gel To Embrace My Wavy Hair or Do CGM?

February 2, 2021 by Emily Evert 13 Comments

I Used To Cringe At The Thought Of Using Gel

I remember when I first started to consider trying the curly girl method, the thing that I was most hesitant about was gel.

I had always just used shampoo and conditioner. The only time I used anything else was for formal events like weddings, where I had an updo that I was trying to preserve. I didn’t like that hair-sprayed feeling.

In my teens when I realized that my flat iron was damaging my hair and I decided to start using a heat-protecting spray, I tried a few varieties before I found one I could live with. I didn’t want my hair to feel like it had any products in it.

I was born in the early 90’s and have a lot of older siblings. I remember some of my older brothers using blue or green gel in their hair in the late 90’s or early 00’s to make their hair hard and “spikey”. Hair gel was something I associated with wet-looking, stiff hair. I didn’t want my hair to look wet or feel stiff.

So when I started looking up curly girl method routines and finding that almost every routine included gel…I was disheartened. For some reason, it didn’t immediately occur to me that these people I was watching clearly had hair that wasn’t wet-looking or stiff, so it probably didn’t feel super yucky either.

I tried to skip gel, at first. I just tried to not brush my hair and let it dry to see what it would do.

Uneven Curl Pattern | How I Tighten My Straighter Section

February 1, 2021 by Emily Evert 9 Comments

There’s a category of questions that I see posted on Wavy/curl groups and forums that I would classify as uneven curl pattern problems. I have an uneven curl pattern. I still have days where my hair is quite uneven, but when I take the time to focus on balancing out my pattern, I feel like I am fairly successful. I thought my tips and tricks may help some others out there!

Hair is straight and wavy

This was a few months after I started the curly girl method. Thankfully, days like this where my curl pattern is super uneven are more rare now that I’ve learned tips and tricks to help prevent it!

How to Style Wavy Hair Upside Down Without Messing Up The Back

January 29, 2021 by Emily Evert 19 Comments

“I can’t plop, it messes up the back of my head!”

“How on earth do you guys style your hair upside down and not have a rats nest in the back?”

“I have to style upright or the backside of my head is so messy!”

I see things like this in Wavy/curly Facebook groups and forums all the time. I completely understand why, too. I had a really tough time with the back of my head when I had first started the curly girl method. I mean, look at this picture!

In the past I did a blog post comparing the importance of hair products vs the importance of hair techniques. In that post I explain how techniques are extremely important. Something important to understand about techniques is that the little details can make a big difference.

I am happier with the results that I get while styling upside down rather than right side up, but it requires doing upside down styling in a rather detailed way. (I also have a upside down vs rightside up hair styling blog post if you want to check that out).

In this post, I’m going to go into more detail about how I style upside down, specifically sharing the little tips and tricks that I use to avoid getting a big mess in the back of my hair.

How To Tell If Your Wavy Hair Is Weighed Down

January 3, 2021 by Emily Evert 16 Comments

A while back I had suggested to someone seeking advice in a wavy or curly hair forum that their hair might be weighed down. They responded by asking me how they could tell if their waves were weighed down or not.

I immediately realized I should use this as a blog post topic. It was a great question, and one that I would have needed help with early on, too. I knew the odds were high that this would be something others would want to know, too.

how to tell if your wavy hair is weighed down

Signs That Your Wavy Hair Is Weighed Down

  • Your roots are flatter than usual
  • Your roots look wet or oily
  • Your roots feel “producty” or sticky.
  • Your waves are limp instead of bouncy.
  • Your hair literally feels heavy.
  • You have less volume than usual.
  • Your waves start lower on your head than usual.
  • Your curl pattern is looser/straighter than it used to be.

But..

How Can I Tell If My Hair Is Weighed Down?

To know if your wavy hair is weighed down, you need to know how your hair “normally” looks, feels and acts. Is it flatter, straighter, less voluminous, less bouncy, or heavier feeling than normal? If so, it’s likely weighed down.
