Whether you’ve always known that you have naturally wavy hair, or whether you spent most of your life thinking it was straight and have just found out…you may find great value in joining a wavy hair community.
For many of us who are choosing to embrace our naturally wavy hair, it becomes more of a hobby than just part of our beauty or hygiene routine.
When I thought my hair was straight, I spent little time on it, and little time thinking about it. Once I started the curly girl method, I found myself thinking about my hair everyday and giving it more of my time (And money!).
The thing is, I don’t have anyone close to me with naturally wavy hair who follows the curly girl method. I know some people with curly hair, but they aren’t into the curly girl method. Their hair is more of just a hygiene thing for them.
So, I found myself thinking about my hair all the time, googling all I could about wavy hair, and I had nobody to talk to about it! If you feel the same way, here are some places where you can join wavy hair communities!
Wavy Hair Communities
- /r/wavyhair and /r/curlyhair on Reddit.
- Facebook groups such as Wavy Method International
More details about each below!
Reddit’s wavy and curly hair subreddits.
The /r/curlyhair subreddit is extremely active. The last couple of months, /r/wavyhair has really picked up traction as well. I subscribe to both and interact on both. However, I am particularly fond of the wavy hair forum. I think it’s easy for people with wavy hair to feel like waves are somehow lesser than curls. Or that they should be able to turn their waves into curls.
Hanging around curly hair communities can sort of contributing to comparing and getting insecure. While hair pattern isn’t often a huge factor in what products work well for your hair, there are some general correlations. For example, most wavies will be weighed down by products that are really heavy in shea butter or oils.
Wavies are more likely to have low porosity hair than those with tighter curl patterns. So, in a loose way, following recommendations can be helpful. Mostly though, I think it’s great to just support other wavies, see others with beautiful wavy hair, to help you appreciate your own instead of comparing to curls.
Facebook groups.
Search Facebook for wavy hair groups and you’ll find several. There are lots of curly girl method specific groups, and there are groups that are open to members who do not follow the curly girl method as well. I know for many who don’t follow the curly girl method, they feel frustrated with how the curly girl method is SO prominent online.
It can feel like everyone expects you to follow the curly girl method if you are wavy. So, if you don’t follow the curly girl method, those Facebook groups that specifically say they are open to those who don’t follow the curly girl method can be a great resource. I personally love the Wavy Method International. They are very accepting of those who don’t follow the strict CGM.
Instagram.
Instagram is a really popular place for people to share pictures of their wavy hair and post their routines regularly. The community on Instagram is huge! I am on there as @WavyHairCareBlog if you want to follow me.
Instagram is a place where a lot of people basically share photo diaries of their hair. They post pictures daily, or a few times a week sharing what’s new with their hair. If you like following people’s hair journey step by step, it’s a great place to be. There are a lot of wavy Instagram accounts that share really gorgeous “magazine perfect” photos.
I personally am not great with photography, and I almost never wear make up. So, my photos are quite similar to the ones I share here on my blog. Just very ordinary, simple selfies showing my hair. I’ve found other accounts that are sharing their journey in much the same way. While I enjoy following the really pretty picture accounts for inspiration, I really like finding ‘everyday’ people with ordinary selfies to follow.
So, don’t feel like you have to be an influencer, blogger or youtube to make your own Instagram for your wavy hair journey. People like me would be happy to follow you!

YouTube
There are lots of wavy haired YouTubers, too! While it’s unlikely that you’re ready to start up your own youtube channel, there is the comment section. In most cases, it’s unlikely that you’ll hear back from the original creator, but you can chat with other readers. I often see people commenting with their experiences or questions in the comments on YouTube videos, and interacting with others that way.
What wavy hair communities are best?
It really depends on what you’re looking for! I personally prefer the Reddit forums above the others. My second favorite is Facebook groups. I love how active they are, and how responsive they are if you make your own posts. You can’t really have that kind of feedback on places like youtube comment sections.
While Instagram is extremely active, it also doesn’t really have the same back and forth that Reddit has. I also find myself feeling more self-conscious about my own hair after spending a lot of time on Instagram. The ratio of ‘perfect’ photos on there just messes with my head a little bit, I think.
Where on Reddit and Facebook groups, there are still lots of photo sharing, and lots of people with absolutely gorgeous waves. Yet they’re more ‘real life’ photos, I suppose? So, I just don’t find that they mess with my head the same way that Instagram tends to. With Instagram, I’m trying to be conscious of who I follow, to make sure it’s not all magazine-perfect photos on my dash over there.
Feel free to leave a comment sharing what YOUR favorite wavy hair community is. Do you participate in any that I missed? I’d love to find out about more!

I hope someday THIS can be a forum for discussion on each of the wonderful topics you’ve chosen to cover!
I am slowly going through the blog. Some feedback on navigability: I wish there was a full list of post titles somewhere, or a search bar, or tags by topic. Scrolling through endless pages five posts at a time is a bit tedious! But I’m a few pages in already. 🙂
Would love to see more product recommendations, especially for each of the hair thicknesses (thick, medium, fine) and densities (full, medium, thin)!

Aww, that’s so sweet, thank you! I started this blog about 4 months ago now so I’m still kinda figuring certain aspects out as I go. I just made a blog post directory that lists all of my blog posts, it’s linked in my menu bar now. So, hopefully that will keep others from having to scroll back so far!
I have intentionally skewed away from talking about products too much, to try to keep focus on techniques as I think techniques are more important. Products do matter as well though so I do plan to talk more about products over time. I am planning to compare a bunch of type of gels, the same way I did a mousse comparison. I only have experience with my own hair type which is dense, normal to coarse strand thickness, and mixed porosity. So I’m somewhat hesitant to suggest products for other hair types due to my lack of experience. I’d love to eventually bring in some guest bloggers who have different hair types who can speak to what works for their fine hair (or other properties). It seems that those with thin & fine hair in particular tend to have unique challenges. I’d love to bring in someone who knows those properties better to help those people. 🙂
I just discovered your website and have been wondering for a while if I have wavy hair. I tested it out using your methods last night and do have significant waves! So exciting!
My question is: do you have a post on some common hair styles that are wavy hair friendly? Especially for when it’s summertime and having my hair down feels too hot or in the way of doing projects and such.
I don’t have a post like that yet, but it is on my list of things to research and post about eventually. I don’t pull mine back much at all so I don’t know of many options right now, it’s something I’ll have to research and experiment with my own hair on, before I can blog on it. I know it’s a common question for people with wavy hair though, so I’d like to provide that blog post someday.
